Watch Big House Presentation by Southold Civics

The Southold Town Civic Associations made a presentation at a public meeting of the Town Board on May 25, 2021 on the ever-increasing house sizes in Southold. The presentation will include our joint proposal for limiting house size in Southold, something that almost all other East End towns have enacted. (East End Beacon article)

In 2016 the Orient Association surveyed our membership on nine propositions related to the Comprehensive Plan to identify priorities for the community. Limiting house size emerged as a major priority. The survey with vote tally is here. As many of you are aware, the issue continues to be a concern.

We are jointly requesting changes to the Zoning Code in order to preserve the rural and small-town feel of Southold Town. Here is the letter to the editor of the Suffolk Times requesting action on house size in Southold before it is too late. Saltwater Intrusion Forum

The Orient Association hosted a Forum on saltwater intrusion on Sunday, October 27th at 2pm in Poquatuck Hall. The ongoing water study points to sea level rise and saltwater intrusion as a substantial threat to the Orient community. Speakers Frederick Stumm, Research Hydrologist, from the US Geological Survey and Greg Nissen from Mermaid Water Solutions will share their knowledge of recent changes in the saltwater levels in coastal areas and how to handle them.
